Rented a Lens

Just ordered a rental on the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. My primary reason for renting the lens is for an NHL game I'm going to. I've got front row seats to see the Ottawa Senators @ Tampa Bay Lightning. Senators are my favorite team, and we get into a VIP club with these tickets. I feel I'll need something wide, but still have some range for on-ice shots.

I'll post pictures from the game after the 29th.

hmmmm... even though you're gonna be close to the boards, you might want to think about a zoom lens also to get the action on the other far end. The 70-200mm F4 IS is tack sharp and would be a good addition for any sporting event (and probably not TOO much to rent).

The problem with that is trying to get it through security. That was another reason for going with the 17-55 IS. It looks fairly "stock" if you will.

I'm going to keep my XTi in the car in case they turn down the 50D. Last time I had these tickets I got in no problem with the XTi, but the 50D is much bigger.

I also found that when you're shooting through the boards, the further away the subject, the more blurry they become.

ahhh yeah thats probably true about the boards.

do you have problems bringing your camera in? I've never been refused and I carry a lot of gear. My camera is huge especially with the battery grip attached.

17-55 is a nice lens, I guess id be worried that I couldnt see the far end, but if your seats are way up close, maybe you dont have to

if you do decide to rent a telephoto...give the 70-200 f 2.8 IS L a whirl...might as well if youre renting, and its indoor low light performance is glorious (Even at distances...)

as an example, I was sitting at the very last row of a local game in the bleachers...way up high...

Well the nice thing is, the two teams meet up again next year so this time around I'm going to ask the security staff what is/isn't acceptable.

Also, the place I rented from didn't have much of a selection, a lot of their stuff was currently being rented.

Borrowlenses does seem to have some good prices! $84 for a weekly rental on a Nikon 70-200 f/2.8. But shipping is $36, so that brings the total to $120. Locally, I have Glazer's Camera with a large selection, but that same lens would be $120 plus tax, or $132.

$12 more locally, but then I have to drive there and back (100 miles total), where the Borrowlenses deal ships it right to my door.

I might have to give them a try!
