looking for my first new glass

i have a 450d and am looking to finally upgrade from my stock lens. i need a good all-purpose lens with more a bit more reach than my 18-55 kit. i stumbled upon the 17-85 is usm and it seems to be meet all my criteria. im also not looking to spend more than $500. does anyone have any experience with this lens / lens-body combo? can you recommend anything else? any examples taken with the lens would be great. thanks in advance!

only other lens I might recommend was the 28-135mm IS (40D kit lens)

You won't get much on the wide end like you will with the 17-85mm but its a pretty solid walk around lens. I got rid of it thought cuz I prefer to be able to go wide instead of zoom in... you can always try to get closer to your subject if need be plus 85mm is a good zoom anyway.

Yeah, the bad language filter seems to be wound a little too tight. Do we have to spell it gla$$? I guess in the case of L series gla$$, that would be correct!

15-85mm f3.5

The review says this lns is excellently SHARP, a tab sharper than the 18-200 f3.5

And it is or $699.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens Review

Check out the review.

I have not personally used this one, but a friend has the 18-200 f3.5 and it is actually performs very well in terms of photo quality, color and sharpness.
