I'm not 100% sure but I'm gonna guess he used his 24-70 f/2.8L.

you should join the autophotog flickr group pool (G should too) and add those pics to the pool! theyre fantastic

Great close-up shots with a wide angle lens. I would suggest using higher ISO setting on the indoor pics with a faster shutter speed for more sharpness. The 40D is quite capable of good shots at even ISO 800.
