First of all, I dont think i am in the same league as all you folks and your fancy pics...that being said, I think each person has their own opinion, and here is my constructive criticisms:
I personally think the vacuums are distracting. they take up about as much space as the car. Quote:

More...I am in the mood to be critical...:P
I am a little off -put by the stars, because they are yellow. Also, the sky could be replaced with something more pleasant. The car is also centered in the frame. Remember the rule of 3rds. Quote:

This area has great potential with the building right there...I would get down and use the foliage from the center there and use it as the foreground to the building? I

The first of these two, not a big fan of the effect, its a bit grainy in negative form, and just seems a bit rough around the edges
the second...man, i LOVE that shadow!! its perfect with the wedding band, really amazing idea with it. If you had LR, or just any other photo editing software, I would add a .25 stop of exposure, up the contrast, and crop a smidge to focus on the ring/shadow (and move it off center)...its got lots of potential to be great! perhaps even shoot the second one closer, more in frame, and use the offset of the shadow and the ring to make it a non-centered composition, and shallow DOF to really emphasize it..its awesome in concept

I'm late to the thread, but maybe that's good because I see more shots. I will say that you've got a great eye and shoot some interesting perspectives. The worst shot was that garden patch. The lighting was too strong on the patch and your perspective was "ordinary". You might have gone as wide as you could with the lens and gotten down close to the patch, using a small aperture to get good DOF.
Are you shooting RAW? Even with a P&S you can gain a lot by shooting RAW and learning to post process. You're chosing scenes with a lot of dynamic range and you're leaving some on the table. When you get a good DSLR you can do much more, but digital is exposed different from film. Look at the histogram, so that you increase the exposure to the Right of the histogram without washing out the highlights. This only works for RAW. This technique will result in an uncorrected image that looks bright, but you use the Light or Brightness slider in your RAW-conversion software to bring the exposure down to a better level. The you Crop, check the Detail, add Noise Reduction if needed (several of your shots could use a little), tweak the Saturation and you've got an Image that pops. (No Photoshop required, as you can do all this in your RAW-conversion software). I really like the potential that I see in your work. You're doing the right thing in asking for critique and advice. Forums like this will help you to advance quickly. Dave |
