What makes the shot? Animals

I always struggle on what makes one photo better than another when I feel both are good. For example I was trying to decide between these 4 for a photo challange on another site- topic was animals.

I'm sorry, but none of these images is not sufficiently sharp.
First, a big mess and the bird blends into the background
Second, not sharp and has a squirrel tail bar
Third, best of all, but crop it is not pretty
Fourth: cut off the dog and not sharp

yeah I kinda agree. 3 is the best but it still needs work. Crop and also if you have PS it needs some contrast adjustments and possibly use the highlight tool to help bring back the blown out looking snow.
