BMW rig shot image build

Couple people asked me to share this when they found out that it wasnt all one photo. I'll try and explain it the best I can.... I'm horrible at explaining things lol. Its 3 rig shots taken from the same spot, same day, same everything except shutter speeds.

The PSD for this shot is 260mb. Took me like 3 hours to edit this (with my ADD lol)

Here it goes...hope I don't confuse you to much.

1- Started with my base image. Colors and such were done in Lightroom then brought into Photoshop.

2- I used a second picture to get the reflections of the windows back since they were blown out and ugly (IMO) in the other shot. I used a layer mask and the brush tool to erase the rest of the image except the window.

3- Very minimal edit... I wanted the BBK to POP more since thats why we shot from this angle... I selected that area on the original photo...copied the selection and pasted it to a new layer. Then used the brightness-contrast-saturation to make it pop a little more.

4- Next up was the road. I liked this road a lot from ANOTHER (3rd) photo from this shoot so I laid it down over my previous work and added a LAYER MASK to it. I used the brush tools like I did previously to erase everything of the image except the road.

5- Then I found a background that had the blur effect I wanted (again, from the same shoot, same day, time, place, rig set up, just slower shutter speed = more blur) and I layered that over everything else, used the layer mask and brush tools to erase everything but the new background.

(some like this road better then the one I chose...looking at it now... I'm torn. This one is cleaner..but for some reason I like the other one. thought? maybe I'll do anther edit and use this one and see what ppl think)

6- Next I used the CLONE tool to edit out the rig pole and some reflections of the rig/camera/me. Played with the new road contrast/birghtness/sharpness settings and basically have a finished image now.

7- BUT.... I didn't really like the holes in the trees in the background so I duplicated my background layer to make a new one, and used the clone tool again to fill in those spots. I like the full background much more. Then I played with the contrast/saturation/brightness of the new background to give it a little more pop and color to it.

8- After all of that I was pretty much done. Did some minor sharpening and color tweaking to each layer individually and some cleaning up of the clones and layer masks. The last thing I do is create a new layer and add a border to that. Then make my signature and add that to the image as well. Then export and whore around!

Hope that was some one helpful, interesting, exciting, or something. Probably pretty boring and confusing though lol. Thats a glimpse of what goes into a rig shot. Not all of them are that complex. Usually they are pretty simple but I really wanted to put some time and work into this one to get the best image I could, in my eyes.

oh and im working on taking that stupid black line out from behind the car. its a pain in the ass tho for some reason lol.

very cool... i just don't see the cloning thing coming very easy to people who aren't at least a semi pro at PS... I can barely clone out tiny zits on peoples foreheads let alone a huge ass rig in the middle of the photo.

you get used to it. the first time i ever used the clone tool was for a rig shot. you just have to play with it and find out what works. I play with the opacity a bit and the softness of the brush to try and get the best results. some people use the healing tool and something else but i havent had any luck with that yet.

.....google is your friend. lol. to be honest i dont ACTUALLY know. what i THINK it does is take similar pixels to what you have selected and copy them or something along those lines. to be dead honest...im not sure lol.

The Healing Brush tool allows you to fix image imperfections such as scratches, blemishes, etc. By sampling the surrounding area or using a predefined pattern you can blend the imperfections into the rest of the image.

Great write up man. One question, whats with the odd shadow behind the car on the road? I noticed it wasn't in any of the other road shots but that one. Did someones shadow get in the shot? lol

Either way, looks awesome man
