Image Build #1 - Voltex Evo (featured in Performance Auto & Sound Magazine)

I was so kindly asked to post this in the technical forum, so I am

This photoshoot was on a Voltex Evo 8 shot in Provo, UT Jan. 2009 and featured in the Performance Auto & Sound Magazine - October 2009 Issue.

I will briefly go over some steps taken to build the image. Some of the elements are composited into the final piece, the majority of the elements are from multiple exposures (NO NOT HDR), multiple exposures to ensure all elements (ie. windows, paint, wheels, background, etc) are properly exposed with minimal distracting reflections and more clean reflections.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the original, unedited, unaltered base ambient RAW image. From this image various elements were worked on in Photoshop and worked on individually. Elements range from, side passenger windows, windshield, tired & inside fender, ground, sky, and headlight.

Here is the ambient original with some notes:

The passenger windows were exported from a seperate exposure with a CPL filter added to the camera to minimize the washed out reflection, then added as a layer to the original RAW:

The windshield was exported from another seperate exposure with a CPL filter added to the camera to minimize the washed out reflection, then added as a layer to the original RAW:

The tire and inside fender were exported from another seperate exposure and added as a layer to the original RAW. Tire reflection had to be fixed in the reflection of the ground to match the turning tire now on the car:

I shot the sky while scouting locations on a completely different day. The sky was exported in multiple portions and added as a 2 different layers to the original RAW. One layer for the left side of the sky and one layer for the right side of the sky.

The sky then had to be added into the reflection of the ground. This was done in a serpate layer with a low opacity of around 15%.

And here is the final product:

Q: What tool did you use to export the elements (i.e. windows, windshield, wheel)
A: I used the magic wond, however the pen tool could be used as well, especially for more precision.

Q: What tool did you use to remove the rig?
A: Clone tool with a big clone stamp, worked in layers and masked out any part I didn’t want clone afterwards, which you can also erase over if you don’t like masks.

Q: How did you mask in the sky?
A: Pasted the sky in two layers, one for left side and one for the right side of the sky. Used the free transform tool to get the proper angle. Then masked out any parts of the sky over the bride, car, etc.

Q: How did you mask in the sky in the reflection of the ground?
A: Copied the sky into a layer, turned the layer opacity down to around 10-15%.

Q: How did you add in the turned tire reflection into the ground?
A: Lots of patience…

Q: Why did you add a turning wheel opposed to keep the straight one from the raw?
A: I thought it added more character to the picture.

Q: How did you turn on the headlight?
A: Check this tutorial out; Photoshop Tutorials - Photoshopchop.com - TUTORIAL - HID HEADLAMPS

Q: What other editing was done?
A: Curves, levels, shadow/highlight, contrast, colors, etc.

Q: How long did this image take to edit and finalize?
A: Roughly 4.5hrs. The image was 34 layers as well.
